How often does this model fail its MOT?
MOT failure rate by age and the items that cause it, from 130 million tests. Pick a make, model and year.

What the MOT fail rate measures
DVSA publishes an anonymised record of every MOT test in Great Britain. We use 130 million class 4 normal MOT tests from 2022 to 2025. We group them by make, model and the car's age at the test, then count how many fail and which items caused it.
A registration year gives the age: a car first used in 2016 is 10 years old in 2026. The rate at that age pools every car of the model tested at that age, so it describes the model, not one car.
This measures roadworthiness faults, not breakdowns, recalls or running costs. How each car was looked after also plays a part, and the data cannot show that.
Counts
Normal MOT tests only. A retest after a repair is not counted as a second fail.
Does not count
Breakdowns, recalls, warranty claims or running costs. Those are separate questions.
Sample size
We show a rate only where a model has at least 1,000 tests at that age.
Owners matter
How a car has been looked after also affects its MOT result. Use the model rate as context for a specific car's own history.
