The rules

Three systems, decided by registration date

Before March 2001 tax follows engine size. From March 2001 to March 2017 it follows a CO2 band fixed for the car's life. From April 2017 there is a CO2-based first year, then a flat rate, plus a supplement for cars that cost over £40,000 new (£50,000 for electric cars registered from April 2025).

Electric cars have paid vehicle tax since April 2025: band A if registered from March 2001 to March 2017, the standard rate if registered from April 2017. Rates change every April; ours are indicative for 2026/27.
