Can you MOT a car early? Keeping your renewal date
How early you can get an MOT and keep the same renewal date, a worked example with real dates, and what happens if the car fails or is tested too soon.
Updated
Yes. You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before the current one runs out and keep the same renewal date. Test any earlier and the renewal date changes to one year (minus a day) from the date of the pass, so you lose the days in between. There is no need to leave it to the last day, and testing early gives you time to fix a fail before the old certificate expires.
The rule in one line
An MOT lasts for a year. If you pass inside the window, which opens a month (minus a day) before the expiry date, the next expiry date stays the same as it would have been. If you pass before the window opens, the expiry date moves.
A worked example
This builds on the example GOV.UK uses. Say the MOT runs out on 15 May.
| Test date | Result | Next expiry date |
|---|---|---|
| 16 April | Pass | 15 May the following year |
| 1 May | Pass | 15 May the following year |
| 14 April | Pass | 13 April the following year |
The earliest date that keeps the renewal date is 16 April. A pass on 14 April is two days too early, so the next expiry becomes one year (minus a day) from the pass, which is 13 April. In that case the next MOT falls due about a month sooner.
The easy way to work out your own window: take the expiry date, go back one month and add a day.
Finding the expiry date
GOV.UK gives two ways to find when a car's MOT runs out:
- the date printed on the current MOT certificate, if you have one
- the GOV.UK MOT status or MOT history service, using the registration
You can also sign up on GOV.UK for a free MOT reminder by text or email, which for a car arrives one month before the MOT is due.
What about a car's first MOT?
A new car does not need an MOT until the third anniversary of its registration. That date is the deadline for the first test. If you plan to test well before it, ask the test centre which expiry date the pass would give before you book, so there are no surprises.
The rules are different in Northern Ireland, where cars are first tested at four years old. GOV.UK also notes that the keep-your-date rule does not apply if the last MOT was in Northern Ireland and the next one is in Great Britain. In that case the renewal date is based on the date of the GB test.
What if the car fails an early test?
A fail is recorded in the MOT database. GOV.UK says you can take the car away if:
- the current MOT is still valid
- no dangerous defects were listed
The car must still meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness. If a dangerous defect was found, it needs repairing before it is driven, even if the old certificate has weeks left.
This is the real benefit of testing early. A fail two weeks before the expiry date leaves time to get the repair done and retested without the car coming off the road. Our guide to MOT retest rules explains when the retest is free.
Why it matters if you are selling
Some sellers put a car through its MOT just before advertising it. A fresh certificate can make a car easier to sell and gives a buyer up to a year before the next test. There is nothing wrong with that. It does mean the latest pass tells you less than it seems, because the car may have been prepared for it.
What to check when a car was tested just before the sale
A recent MOT is a good start, not the end of the check. Read the whole history, not just the newest certificate.
- Was there a fail just before the pass? That means something was repaired to get through. Ask what, and ask for the invoice.
- What advisories came with the pass? A pass can still list items near the limit, and they will be your bill, not the seller's.
- Do the same items keep coming back? Repeated advisories over several years point to a problem that keeps being patched. Our guide on how to read MOT history shows what to look for.
- Does the mileage make sense? Compare the readings across tests for a steady pattern.
To see how often cars of that model and age fail compared with all cars, use our MOT fail rates by model. The MOT does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox, so see the car and ask a mechanic as well. For the basics of the test itself, see our guide to MOT rules explained.
Frequently asked questions
How early can you get an MOT?
You can test up to a month (minus a day) before the current MOT runs out and keep the same renewal date. You can test earlier, but then the new expiry date is one year (minus a day) from the pass.
Do you lose days if you MOT early?
Not if you test inside the window. If the MOT runs out on 15 May, a pass on or after 16 April keeps 15 May as the renewal date the following year.
Can I drive my car if it fails an early MOT?
Yes, if the old certificate is still valid and no dangerous defects were listed. The car must still be roadworthy, and it makes sense to fix the failed items before the old certificate runs out.
How do I find my MOT expiry date?
It is printed on your current MOT certificate. You can also use the GOV.UK MOT status or MOT history services with the registration, and sign up for a free reminder.
