What a Volvo S60 Buying Report covers

DVSA MOT tests 2022–2025 · 82,256 MOT tests · Updated

A Buying Report, £14.99 incl. VAT, reads one car's MOT record against 130,233,413 MOT tests of cars like it [1].

  • 4 parts: Model risks for this year and fuel, what similar cars did at their next MOT, repairs ahead, viewing checklist.
  • One car, no subscription: each report is for one registration.
  • Not a mechanical inspection: it reads records, it does not look at the car.

What a Volvo S60 report starts from

At 11 years, 28.1% of Volvo S60 MOT tests ended in a fail once adjusted for mileage (5,912 MOT tests): lower than the 36.4% for all class 4 vehicles the same age at the same mileage. The raw rate is 27.6%. [1]

Its most common fail items at 11 years, other than wear items: shock absorber leaking (2.5 per 100 MOT tests), steering track rod end: ball joint play (2 per 100 MOT tests).

Typical recorded mileage at that test: 104,563 miles.

The report then reads one Volvo S60's own MOT record against these numbers: whether its advisories point at the same parts, and what cars with the same advisories did at their next MOT.

What the Buying Report covers

  • Model risks for this year and fuel

What tends to fail on this model at this age and with this fuel, from DVSA MOT tests, and which of those the car's own MOT record already points to.

  • What similar cars did at their next MOT

What cars advised on the same parts (or given a minor defect for them) did at their next MOT, about 10 to 16 months later, against cars without those advisories.

  • Repairs ahead

The repairs the record points to, with labelled cost estimates: labour time at an ONS hourly rate, plus parts.

  • Viewing checklist

What to look at and what to ask on a viewing, one line per risk the report found.

One example from the data

Of all class 4 vehicles aged 9 to 11 that were advised on their brake pipes (or given a minor defect for them), 8.6 in 100 failed on brake pipes at the next MOT, against 0.4 in 100 vehicles without that advisory (506,323 pairs of tests with it). [1] A report puts figures like these next to the car's own advisories.

What the report does not cover

  • It is not a mechanical inspection, and it does not say a car is good.
  • It does not cover outstanding finance, insurance write-offs, police records of stolen cars or keeper changes.
  • It shows no valuation until we have a valuation source we may show you.
  • What similar cars did is evidence about the model, not a promise about one car.
